DOL Workers Want Chao to Come Clean on Comments
Wednesday, July 18, 2007
Fresh from their victory over the attempted outsourcing of 250
Department of Labor jobs, DOL workers turned their attention today to cleaning
up Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao’s recent comments about American workers.
The workers – members of AFGE 12 – handed out bars of soap saying “Chao
Thinks You Stink” and “Get Clean with Local 12” with copies of Chao’s
Parade Magazine interview where she called American workers unhygienic,
undisciplined, and poorly skilled. “Many contractors and managers are so
intimidated that they will not take a bar of soap,” said AFGE 12 Human Rights
Committee Chairperson Sarah Harper as she handed out soap and literature.
“People are so fearful, they will not even take a copy of Chao’s
statement,” said AFGE 12 Vice President Eleanor Lauderdale. “The most
frightening thing in the federal workforce now is the fear. The fear of fact and
truth,” added Lauderdale. AFGE 12 will hold a similar event Thursday at the Bureau of Labor Statistics. (above and left) AFGE 12 member Michelle Leszkiewicz handing out soap to
