DC Homecare Workers Join Union

Wednesday, July 11, 2007

More than 200 DC homecare workers voted to join 1199 SEIU United Healthcare Workers East on Tuesday, the first time such workers have organized in the District. "As homecare workers we are a positive force in the world," said Nursing Unlimited homecare worker Nicole Floyd. "We provide love and support for those in need. We saw forming our union with 1199 SEIU as another positive step we could take.  Now, we will be able to provide better lives for our families by having a united voice.  And better jobs means that Nursing Unlimited will be able to keep staff so our clients will get the best care." Homecare workers allow seniors and people with disabilities to live safely and independently in their homes instead of being institutionalized.  As the population ages, the demand for quality homecare services has been skyrocketing.  However, most homecare workers receive low pay and no benefits, creating an intense worker shortage and high turnover. Most of the Nursing Unlimited workers receive the District mandated minimum of $10.50 an hour, but no healthcare for themselves or their children, no sick time, no paid time off and no retirement.
