Workers Celebrate 4th with VA Governor

Monday, July 9, 2007

More than 150 union members, their families, elected officials and candidates enjoyed a July 4 picnic at the Northern Virginia Central Labor Council’s (CLC) hall with Governor Tim Kaine. With just 4 days advance notice, the CLC’s officers and trustees organized the event and got the word out. From decorating the hall to bringing and preparing the food, union members answered the call. Governor Kaine spent an hour at the CLC shaking hands, talking, posing for photos and signing autographs. He thanked the CLC for its support when he ran and became lieutenant governor in 2001, then governor in 2005. Kaine urged the union members to do all they could to support Labor-endorsed candidates in the upcoming November elections for State House and Senate as well as local positions. CLC President Daniel Duncan reminded all that Kaine, as Mayor of Richmond, passed the state’s first Living Wage ordinance and that he publicly thanked union members on Election Night 2005 for his gubernatorial victory.
