Labor Updates (6/29/07)

Friday, June 29, 2007

Baltimore Sun workers approved a four-year contract on June 14. The contract was ratified by Guild members in a voice vote and includes signing bonuses, annual salary increases, retention of current pension, 401(k), and sick leave benefits, full protection of union rights, and the creation of a joint committee on journalism quality. "In very tough times in the newspaper industry, I think we achieved the best contract we could possibly get," said Michael Hill, chair of the Guild unit at The Sun. "That is not to say that we don't have problems with certain provisions, but that is the nature of this process… But the bottom line is that the union emerged from this process united and strong, giving our members the protection and security they need and deserve as they face an uncertain future." The contract was finalized 10 days before the expiration of the previous contract. Click here for more details. Photo courtesy of the Washington-Baltimore Newspaper Guild
