Washington Gas Outsourcing Draws Second Protest

Wednesday, June 27, 2007

Despite the blazing sun and wilting humidity, two dozen activists picketed Washington Gas' Constitution Avenue headquarters at noon Tuesday to protest the utility's decision last week to lay off 300 employees, including 150 union call center workers. Singing "We are the union, the mighty mighty union," chanting "Don't send our jobs to Delhi," and passing out flyers to sweaty tourists, the picketers defied threats by Washington Gas security guards to call the police. "Down with the bosses, up with the workers!" said AFSCME 2910 President Saul Schniderman. Tuesday's action followed Monday's noontime demo at the Washington Gas call center in Springfield, VA. Stay tuned for updates on future actions.
