Thousands Rally for Fair Immigration Reform
Wednesday, June 20, 2007
Workers joined thousands of immigration activists and
religious leaders for a prayer service, march and rally to the White House
yesterday in support of humane immigration reform. Banners, flyers, pictures,
live music, and chants filled the halls of Metropolitan African Methodist
Episcopal Church, the site of the prayer service. The Bible “teaches us to
feed the hungry, give drinks to the thirsty, give clothes to the poor, and to
welcome strangers,” said Reverend Moses. After the service, thousands marched
down 16th Street in the blistering heat to the White House to demand justice for
immigrant workers and their families. “The struggle of immigration is the
struggle of the soul of America,” said Angelica Salas, of the Coalition for
Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles. The event was co-sponsored by the Fair Immigrant Rights Movement and the National
Capital Immigrant Coalition.
