Baltimore Sun Workers Rally

Thursday, June 14, 2007

More than 100 workers rallied outside the Baltimore Sun Tuesday afternoon in support of Sun worker contract demands. The Sun and the Washington-Baltimore Newspaper Guild Local 32/CWA – the union representing Sun workers – have been negotiating since mid-May, after the expiration of the contentious 2003 contract. “Management put a comprehensive proposal on the table [Monday], contingent on approval by midnight [today]. It has serious problems in it,” that include attacks on wage structure and requests for journalists to serve as both reporter and cameraman, reports Michael Hill of the Guild Bargaining Committee. Photojournalists held a three-day by-line strike, starting on Monday, to protest the combination reporter/photojournalist proposal. If “reporters are forced to carry cameras we need some contract protections to make sure this is not abused and photojournalists do not lose their jobs,” Hill says. The Guild will hold a membership meeting TONIGHT that could include a possible contract vote. For more info, click here. Photo courtesy of the Washington-Baltimore Newspaper Guild
