American Eagle Day of Action Saturday

Friday, June 1, 2007

Workers, students and labor activists will gather at nine American Eagle Outfitters stores throughout the Metro DC area Saturday to expose unfair treatment of workers at in its distribution warehouse and to demand the clothing retailer live up to its code of conduct. Workers at the Canadian warehouse, National Logistics Services (NLS), faced harassment and intimidation from NLS management after a majority of workers applied for a union certification vote. "We feel insecure about our jobs because of the company's intimidation. We need a union because we have no voice," said an NLS worker who spoke anonymously for fear of retaliation. American Eagle’s Code of Conduct requires that its contractors respect worker rights to form unions, but has not applied these standards to NLS workers, says UNITE HERE. "If American Eagle is serious about their Code of Conduct, then they will demand compliance from NLS for Canadian workers, just as they would for garment workers in China," said Alex Dagg, UNITE HERE's Canadian Co-Director. The DC events are part of a larger 18-city Days of Action campaign organized by UNITE HERE. Click here to send a letter in support of the distribution workers.
