No Vacation Nation
Thursday, May 24, 2007
(Workers Independent News)The “no-vacation nation” – that’s the reputation
the U.S. has in a world where nearly all rich industrialized countries guarantee
workers paid vacation time. According to the Center for Economic and Policy
Research, 28 million U.S. workers – or one in four – don’t get any paid
vacation time. European workers get a legally mandated minimum of at least 20
paid vacation days a year. On top of the guaranteed vacation time, most rich
countries provide between 5 and 13 paid official holidays by law for their
workers. The U.S. is the only advanced economy that does not guarantee any paid
vacations for workers. Have a good Memorial Day weekend! January-February 2002 cover of Working People
