Healthcare Workers Celebrate Nurse's Week

Wednesday, May 9, 2007

1199 SEIU United Healthcare Workers East will celebrate Maryland’s nurses with a Nurse’s Week event in Bowie, MD today.  “Nurses in Maryland have much to celebrate,” says Carol Bragg, an RN at Prince George’s Hospital in Cheverly, “including passage of a Safe Patient Lifting law that was recently signed into law by Governor Martin O’Malley.” 1199 SEIU United Healthcare Workers East’s event coincides with dozens of Nurses Week (May 6-12) events across the country, including state and federal lobby days on the RN Checklist for Change, Nurses of Distinction awards, meetings with nurses and employers on improving patient care, and a national RN conference call with U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky on legislation requiring safe nurse-to-patient ratios in all acute care hospitals.  On the heels of Nurses Week, RNs will be participating in national Mother’s Day events urging increased funding for the state children’s health insurance program (SCHIP).
