UMD Student Arrested for Worker Rights Action

Monday, April 30, 2007

University of Maryland students demanding worker rights were barred and arrested last Thursday at the College Park Campus. When eleven students held a demonstration in UMD-College Park President Dan Motes’ office, campus police blocked the exits, demanded identification,  and arrested one of the students. The students were demanding that their school sign onto the Designated Suppliers Program (DSP) to ensure that UMD-College Park apparel is manufactured in factories that respect worker rights. "We went in there because we believe our voices should be heard and listened to," said Daniela Vann, a junior government and politics major. Repeated requests by students for a meeting with President Motes to discuss the issue have been unanswered. UMD-College Park, currently affiliated with the Worker Rights Consortium, which monitors factories that produce collegiate apparel, has thus far refused to sign onto the DSP.
