AFSCME Maryland Blasts UMES President

Wednesday, May 14, 2014

(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)Calling the move a corporate handout, the Maryland Chapter of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees today sharply criticized University of Maryland – Eastern Shore President Juliet Bell for her decision to outsource the jobs of 85 Dining Services workers on the campus. “This is a shameful move,” said AFSCME Maryland President Patrick Moran. “At a time when our state and national leaders are working to lift hard-working families out of poverty by increasing the minimum wage, President Bell has chosen to push 85 UMES workers well below the poverty line.“ Moran charged that “this move will destroy decent paying, family sustaining jobs and a large out-of-state corporation will reap big profits that come from payments our students make when they pay for meal programs. This is just wrong and President Bell needs to know that AFSCME members will continue to work with elected leaders and student groups to fight moves like this which force workers into poverty wages.”
