Rally Set for Tuesday to Support Wage Theft Bill
Monday, May 5, 2014
(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)With the Wage Theft Prevention Act bill
expected to be voted on tomorrow, the Employment Justice Center and allies are
planning a rally at the DC City Council at 9am. "Help us pack the room for
the vote!" the EJC urges. "Chamber lobbyists have come out in strong
opposition to the bill, and will be fighting us every step of the way with
eleven amendments they've already floated to weaken the bill, so we need to
show huge community support to fight back." The Wage Theft Prevention Act
of 2014 strengthens and expands safeguards against wage theft in the District,
and would establish formal procedures to enable victims of wage theft to
recover unpaid wages and damages, increase the penalties for those responsible
for committing wage theft and provide greater protection for workers who stand
up for their rights.Check out the EJC's report, Stolen
Wages in the Nation's Capital, for more info on the bill.
