DC-Area Events Mark Anniversary of Bangladesh Garment Factory Collapse
Wednesday, April 23, 2014
(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)
Two DC-area
actions this week mark the 1-year anniversary
of the collapse of the Rana Plaza
factory in Dhaka, Bangladesh, killing more than
1,100 garment workers and
injuring thousands more. Today
at 6p, DC Jobs with Justice will
lead a community and
worker delegation to deliver a letter to a
local Walmart store manager
demanding that Walmart take responsibility for
the safety and dignity of
workers throughout their global supply chain.
Walmart has failed to fairly
compensate the families of the workers killed
or injured, and it continues to
refuse to sign onto the legally-binding Accord
on Fire and Building Safety.
Contact JWJ at info@dcjwj.org
or
202-543-1540 for the location.
Tomorrow
at 5:30p, the AFL-CIO,
International Labor Rights Forum and
United Students Against Sweatshops will rally
outside the Children's Place store in
Columbia Heights to demand
compensation to the families of the Rana Plaza
workers. photo: Huffington
