Unite Here 23 Wins Golden Picket Sign Award
Monday, March 3, 2014(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)
The fight
for workplace rights and decent wages for fast
food workers and low-wage
employees of federal contractors caught fire in
2013 as these workers walked
out of their workplaces and onto the front
pages of newspapers here and across
the country to dramatize their demands for
living wages, decent benefits and
working conditions and the right to unionize.
While the struggle by 2 million
employees of federal contractors continues,
Smithsonian workers in late 2013
won recognition with Unite Here 23 – this
year’s Golden Picket Sign Award
winner -- by Restaurant Associates in a hopeful
harbinger of more victories to
come in 2014. Local 23, along with other
award-winners, will be
recognized at the 37th annual
Evening with Labor on March
15 at
the
Omni. Tickets are still available: email kmckirchy@dclaborarchives.org
