Monday, March 3, 2014(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)
The United Farm Workers
union is hosting a fundraiser on the opening weekend for “Cesar Chavez,”
the
new movie about the charismatic UFW founder. The film stars Michael Peña,
America Ferrera, Rosario Dawson and John Malkovich and is directed by Diego
Luna. The fundraiser will be held Sunday, March 30 at 5
p.m. at
Regal Gallery Place Stadium with a
reception to follow at the theatre. Chavez “used to say his job as an
organizer
was helping ordinary people do extraordinary things,” says Paul Chavez,
President of the Cesar Chavez Foundation. “Cesar made everyone believe they
were important. It didn’t matter if you were a lawyer in court or a cook in
the
strike kitchen, ” Chavez “gave farmworkers faith that they could win
against
great odds, even if they were poor and uneducated.” The UFW fundraiser is
dedicated to more than 5,000 farmworkers in Fresno County battling for a union
contract and millions in back wages. For information on sponsoring the
fundraiser, call Irv Hershenbaum at 213-381-5611
