Right to Strike Reaffirmed in NLRB Settlement with Unity Disposal
Monday, January 20, 2014
(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has reached a settlement agreement
with Unity Disposal and Recycling over the company’s firing of workers who
went on strike last October. Unity will repay the 42 workers for wages lost
during the strike and will post a notice promising not to violate the
employees’ rights under federal labor law again. The company had already
reinstated the workers back in November, which was also part of the settlement.
Dennis Martire, Vice-President and Regional Manager of Liuna’s Mid-Atlantic
Region called the agreement “a major victory for working families in the
Mid-Atlantic Region because it reaffirms every workers’ right to strike
without threat of reprisal.” strike photo by Nicole Duarte
