Partnering with the Finishing Trades
Institute, the Mid-Atlantic
Carpenters Training Centers, the Sheet Metal Workers 100 Apprenticeship and
Training Center, the Washington DC Building Trades Council and some signatory
contractors, the Metro Washington Labor Council’s Community Services Agency
helped win a Planning Grant from the Maryland EARN Program (Employment
Advancement Right Now). EARN is a new program with state funding through
the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation that is promoting
strategic industry partnerships “to help companies be more competitive, grow
the economy and employ more workers,” says CSA Executive Director Kathleen
McKirchy. Phase 1 is to convene the partners for planning and innovative
training development. Phase 2 would be a roll-out of the training
identified in the plan “and the partners plan to apply for these dollars as
well,” McKirchy added. The “Prince George's and Charles County Construction
Industry Partnership for Jobs” grant is the only construction-related one
awarded in the metro area, and was one of just 29 industry partnerships around
the state. CSA also was awarded a 2014 grant of $50,000 from the MARPAT
Foundation, a long-time funder of CSA, for continued support of CSA’s
Building
Futures Construction Pre-Apprenticeship program.
