Twice The Joy: Two DC Labor Chorus Holiday Concerts This Saturday
Tuesday, December 3, 2013(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)
With songs sung in Spanish, Hebrew and English and spanning South African,
African-American, British, Israeli and Peruvian traditions, the annual DC Labor
Chorus concert this Saturday (link) departs from the usual holiday fare. The
program includes the Hebrew peace song, “Shir l’shalom,” Joe Glazer’s
“The Mill Was Made of Marble,” Bob Marley’s “Redemption Song,” and
Glenn Burleigh’s “Order My Steps.” Folk writer Elise Witt’s new
song “Break the Silence” will be debuted in its first choral arrangement.
The chorus also will sing “Gonna Take Us all” as a special tribute to
Jon Fromer, a west coast labor songwriter who died this past January. “We are
culture workers who love to share our music,” says Chorus founder and director
Elise Bryant. “The songs are chosen by chorus members individually, but it’s
solidarity that brings them and us together at holiday time – please join
us!” Children will be invited up to the stage for some traditional holiday
favorites and some “worker” versions of familiar songs. There will be two
shows at the Takoma Park Community Center on Saturday, at 3 pm & 7:30
pm.
