Busy End to DC City Council Legislative Session(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)The Council’s passage of the Large Retailer Accountability Act (LRAA) was not the only victory for DC workers in the City Council’s final meeting before their recess. The Drivers’ Safety Amendment Act of 2013 passed its first reading. This would allow undocumented immigrants to obtain a DC driver’s license that does not distinguish them as undocumented. A bill that helps transgender DC residents change their gender on their birth certificate passed, as did a Disapproval Resolution, which will prohibit Fire Chief Ellerbe from making changes to the deployment of ambulances (click here for more from IAFF Local 36 and a video from Fox5). Finally, the Council also approved arbitration awards for members of AFSCME Compensation Units 1 & 2, Teamsters 639, and the DC Nurses Association. - photo: "One City! One License!"
