DC City Council Committee Okays One License for All
Monday, July 8, 2013
(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)The
DC City Council’s Committee on Transportation and the Environment voted
unanimously on Tuesday, July 2, to amend legislation introduced by Mayor Gray
to allow undocumented residents to obtain driver’s licenses. The amendment
removed the provision that driver’s licenses would be issued based on a
two-tiered system. “Marked licenses could be used to single out
undocumented immigrants and open the doors for discrimination,” said Metro
Washington Council President Jos Williams. “We applaud the Committee
for
not creating a sub-class of DC residents.” “The Committee’s vote to
defend equal licenses for all ensures that our city will remain in the
forefront when it comes to supporting immigrant communities,” said Prerna
Lal,
a member of Dream Activist DC. The bill is expected to come before the entire
DC City Council for a vote next week. - Alya Solomon
