CSA News You Can Use: Annual Letter Carriers 'Stamp Out Hunger' Food Drive Set for May 11

(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)Your letter carrier’s load will be a lot heavier this Saturday but they
won’t mind. Letter carriers will pick up your donations of non-perishable food
on May 11 as part of the 21st annual "Stamp Out Hunger" Food Drive,
the largest annual food collection day in the United States. In 2012, the drive,
sponsored by the Letter Carriers (NALC), collected more than 70 million pounds
of food and it has collected nearly 1.2 billion pounds of food since it began in
1993. “In America today, millions go to bed hungry,” says NALC 3825
president Ken Lerch. “It warms our hearts to know that we will be helping so
many.” Donations are given directly to local food pantries and, in 2012, some
30 million people were served. While most food pantries get the bulk of their
donations around Christmas and Thanksgiving, the NALC drive is done during the
spring, when many food pantries are struggling.
