UFCW 400 Urges Action Today to Support Members in Fishing Industry(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) is considering harvest restrictions that could threaten the future of the menhaden fishery and thousands of families who depend on it, including 150 members of UFCW Local 400 who work on the boats. Local 400 is asking activists to click here to “let the ASMFC know that you stand with the menhaden fishery.” The deadline for public comment is today at 5p EST. The Atlantic menhaden fishing industry is one of the oldest, continuous fisheries in the nation, providing stable blue collar jobs for nearly 200 years in areas where industry and employment would otherwise be lacking or absent. - photo: Lionel Waddy (left) and Kenny Parks (right) at a collective bargaining meeting in 2011; photo by Karlyn Williams
