Respect DC Building to Black Friday
Monday, October 22, 2012(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)
This year Walmart, the
biggest store in
the US, may face a strike on the biggest shopping day of the year – Black
Friday. When workers walked out at 23 Walmarts across the country last week
(“Laurel
Walmart Workers Join National Strike,” UC 10/10/2012), Respect
DC organizer Mike Wilson says it “was a huge moment in the fight to hold
Walmart accountable…and the work continues.” Respect DC joined the call for
a
Black Friday national day of action targeting Walmart. While working toward the
Black Friday action, the local coalition is “keeping up the pressure to get
[Walmart] to sign an enforceable city wide CBA [community benefits agreement]
if they want to come to DC.” This Wednesday activists will demonstrate
outside
an award ceremony
for JBG –
one of the developers hired to construct the Walmarts in the District.
