(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)Nearly 150 riders participated in the 10th Annual Dad’s Day Poker Run to
support diabetes research on June 16. “In 10 years, we’ve raised more than
$150,000 for this cause,” said Iron Workers Local 5 member Steve Harty, who
co-chaired the event with Local 5 President John Rayner. Both are members of the
Local 5 Motor Cycle Club, which raises funds for a variety of local nonprofit
organizations. Stops included the American Legion in Hughesville, All American
Harley Davidson in Hughesville, The Blue Dog Saloon and Restaurant in Port
Tobacco, The B&G Tavern in Accokeek, and Harley Davidson of Washington, DC.
The Local 5 union hall in Upper Marlboro served as the first and last stops,
where the “SOSBs” (also known as the Local #5 Retirees) manned the barbecue
grills, with heavy metal music provided by Mudd Fence, featuring Local 5 member
Greg Alley on bass. Several teams representing the Wounded Warriors program
received booming rounds of applause at the event’s start and finish. -
