USPS Hunger Strike Day 4: "Arrest the Postmaster!"
Friday, June 29, 2012
(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)The 4-day hunger strike by postal service workers ended dramatically Thursday
when over 100 demonstrators -- including a sizable contingent from an Occupy
caravan -- stormed the USPS headquarters demanding the arrest of Postmaster
General Patrick Donahoe for slashing postal services and jobs. One protester was
hauled away by police while several staged an impromptu sitdown and the rest
faced off against a line of police blocking the front doors of the Postal
Service. "No justice, no peace," they chanted, and "Hey hey, Ho ho, Donahoe has
got to go!" NALC Branch 3825 President Ken Lerch said the four-day protest had succeeded "beyond
the wildest dreams" of organizers. "Media from coast to coast finally reported
the truth about the ongoing attack on our nation's postal service," Lerch said.
Local chapters of the Community & Postal Workers United are already
springing up across the country to continue the effort to fight service cutbacks
and save jobs, Lerch said. - report by Chris
