Occupy DC Focuses on Jobs, Education and Infrastructure this Thursday(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)All roads lead to Occupy DC this Thursday. In response to an Occupy Wall Street call for solidarity in celebrating its two-month anniversary and an AFL-CIO call for action across the country on the theme of “infrastructure,” Occupy DC will host a large-scale collaboration between the DC occupations and organized labor on Thursday. Beginning at 12 noon, members of the Washington Teachers Union (WTU) Local 6 will be at McPherson Square offering a teach-in on crumbling infrastructure in DC schools. The American Federation of Teachers (AFT) will provide pizza for occupiers and union members to help get their strength up for the afternoon action: a march to the Key Bridge in Georgetown with CWA, NNU, and other supporters. At the Key Bridge, marchers will join with SEIU’s Our DC to line the bridge with protesters from 4p to 6p, taking advantage of rush hour to make the connection between DC infrastructure needs and the many DC workers now out of work. In other Occupy DC-labor news, the many recent solidarity actions between labor and occupy DC have sparked a nascent labor committee to foster deeper connections between the movements. Stay tuned for more information on the Occupy DC Labor Committee now in formation and how to get involved. - photo courtesy beliefnet.com
