Wednesday, September 14, 2011

Labor & Workers Speak Out Against E-Verify(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)Small business owners, labor leaders, and workers will unite this morning (11a in Lafayette Park) to speak out against Congressional proposals to impose E-Verify, an "error-ridden government computer database" created to determine a person’s authorization to work in this country, upon virtually every employer in the country.  Although the program has been roundly criticized for its administrative and potential human cost, the House of Representatives is expected to vote on recently-introduced mandatory E-Verify legislation this year. “E-Verify is bad for workers, bad for immigrants, bad for the economy,” says the AFL-CIO. Speakers include Jaime Contreras, District Chair SEIU Local 32BJ, Nora Escobar, owner, La Chiquita and La Chiquita Express, Barb Coufal, Assistant Director, AFSCME legislative department & Jorge Sactic, owner, bakery in Langley Park, MD. photo courtesy examiner.com
