Monday, July 25, 2011
(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)Both major teachers’ unions – the
American Federation of Teachers (AFT) and the
National Education Association (NEA) -- will
rally with education reformers in Washington
this Saturday for the Save
Our Schools March & National Call to
Action. The rally – which aims at
“putting the public back in public
schools!” -- begins at noon at the Ellipse,
followed by a march on the White House. Among
those speaking are actor Matt Damon, whose
mother is a teacher, actor Richard Dreyfuss and
educator and author Jonathan Kozol. Leading up
to Saturday’s rally are several SOS events at
American University, including a film festival
– which starts today and features titles like
"The People Speak" and “Race to Nowhere” --
and conference with workshops on a host of
education topics. WTU Local 6 “is very
involved in helping organize this event,”
Local 6 President tells Union City, “and we
look forward to seeing our fellow activists
this week!” Check the Council’s calendar
postings or the SOS
