TRANSIT UNION HOSTS TOWN HALL TONIGHT
Monday, June 20, 2011
(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)If you have questions for Metro workers or
their union, here’s your chance. Amalgamated
Transit Union Local 689, which represents over
10,000 front-line employees of the Washington
Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), is
hosting a public Town Hall discussion tonight
at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Library
in Washington, DC (9th and G Streets, NW) from
6-8p. The Town Hall will give the riding public
an opportunity to meet with union officers and
members, giving riders and union members the
opportunity to get to know one another and to
dispel any myths or misunderstandings. The Town
Hall’s goal is to improve relations between
riders and WMATA employees, so that the two
groups can work together to continue to improve
the transit system and ensure that it works
well for everyone. The discussion will focus on
safety, customer relations, and funding/fare
issues and members of the public will be able
to ask questions of union officers, as well as
rank-and-file union members who work in a
variety of capacities, including bus and rail
operators, station managers, and mechanics.
Askia Muhammad, news director for WPFW, will
serve as moderator.
