Demo Supports Howard Headstart Workers

A demonstration tomorrow (see On The Line) will support the ongoing efforts by workers at the Community Action Council of Howard County Head Start to win a union. Two years after organizing – and a year after defeating a decertification campaign – the workers still have no contract and the employer is trying to intimidate them by disciplining pro-union supporters, reports SEIU Local 500 Field Mobilization Director Barbara Chavez. The first contract bargaining session since the unsuccessful decert is set for tomorrow, but “workers are reluctant to take action without additional support,” says Chavez, so “It’s critical to show solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Howard County.”
