Selling Women Short
Monday, January 31, 2005(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)
Combining the personal stories of Wal-Mart employees with superb
investigative journalism, Liza Featherstone’s new book, “Selling Women
Short: The Landmark Battle for Workers’ Rights at Wal-Mart” is the focus of
a panel discussion February 3 (see On The Line). Featherstone’s groundbreaking
expose features Betty Dukes, a 54-year-old African American woman from
California who filed a claim against Wal-Mart after years of discriminatory
treatment and who learned that her experiences were shared by women all over the
country. Dukes became the lead plaintiff in Dukes vs Wal-Mart Stores, a class
action representing 1.6 million women. Confirmed panelists for the 2/3 events
are Featherstone, economist Heather Boushey (Center for Economic and Policy
Research), and lawyer and author Beth Shulman (author of “The Betrayal of
Work: How Low-Wage Jobs Fail 30 Million Americans”).
