Unions and union members are joining in the massive relief efforts to help the millions of survivors of the December 26 tsunami that devastated coastal communities in Sri Lanka, Thailand, India, Indonesia and other Indian Ocean nations. “Thousands of union members and their families are missing or dead,” said AFL-CIO president John Sweeney. “Many no longer have homes.  The destruction of factories, hotels, restaurants and roads has left tens of thousands of garment, tourist and public sector workers without jobs.”  The AFL-CIO American Center for International Labor Solidarity (Solidarity Center) has established a Tsunami Relief Fund: to contribute, make out a check marked Tsunami Relief, payable to Solidarity Center Education Fund, and send it to Tsunami Relief Fund, Solidarity Center, 1925 K St., N.W., Suite 300, Washington, DC, 20006-1105. Click here for more information on the Solidarity Center's relief fund and for a firsthand account of the destruction and initial relief efforts in Thailand. For a list of relief agencies, see the U.S. Agency for International Development website.
