(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)

Survivors of Hurricane Katrina were in Washington last week to urge Congress to speed up recovery efforts as tens of thousands continue to suffer from the devastation. The AFL-CIO has set up worker centers in Mississippi and Louisiana which continue to provide assistance to victims. Through its Union Community Fund, the AFL-CIO has raised several hundred thousand dollars for hurricane relief, and the Community Services Agency of the Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO is serving as the fiscal agent for the flow of dollars to the area.  The Agency also harnessed the generosity and activism of hundreds of area union members and workers who donated cash and needed items for victims in the weeks after the hurricanes.
