GTown Living Wage Coalition Takes The Cake
Monday, March 20, 2006(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)
The Living Wage Coalition threw a birthday party last Wednesday to
commemorate the one-year anniversary of Georgetown University's Just Employment
Policy, and is planning a major rally for next week. "We wanted to remind the
administration we have not forgotten promises they made a year ago," after a
successful hunger strike by students, said Coalition member Sarah Heydemann.
After the Georgetown administration missed the 3/14 deadline to recognize card
check, members of the Living Wage Coalition tried to take their party hats,
birthday cake and megaphone to President DeGioia but found the building had been
put under lockdown by the administration. Unable to get to the President's
office, students chanted outside and held a large banner reading, "Card Check is
Sexy" advocating that Georgetown recognize card check for its subcontracted
workers. A representative from the President's Office came down to speak with
students and eventually accepted the cake on the President's behalf. Frosting
atop the cake read: "One year later and still starving." Students are calling
upon members of the labor, religious and political communities in DC to join
them on Friday, March 31 for a rally to either celebrate Georgetown as a leader
in workers' rights or to continue the fight. This week, various members of the DC community will
deliver letters to President DeGioia in support of the University adopting a
card check policy. Visit
