(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)

Vowing to be “respected and not neglected,” Smithfield Packing workers came to Washington Thursday as part of a national campaign to win a union at the Tarheel, NC meatpacking plant. Five current and former Smithfield workers told harrowing tales of injuries, harassment and discrimination at Smithfield, where over 5,000 employees work in the largest pork processing plant in the US. Two previous attempts to organize have been stymied by management’s vicious anti-union activities, many of which have subsequently been ruled illegal by the NLRB. More than 150 supporters crowded into All Souls Church on 16th Street for a rally, followed by a march and leafleting at the Columbia Heights Metro station, while a delegation of religious, community and labor leaders delivered a letter of concern and returned Smithfield products at the nearby Giant supermarket. The Metro Washington area is the largest single Smithfield market in the nation. More info on the Smithfield campaign at www.smithfieldjustice.com
