Labor's Candidates: Valerie Ervin (Montgomery County Council 5)

Valerie Ervin’s deep roots in the labor
movement started with her career with the
United Food and Commercial Workers Union
(UFCW). Ervin went on to be an instructor at
the George Meany Center for Labor Studies (now
the National Labor College) in Silver
Spring, later rising to vice-president of
the College. In 2002 she became chief of
staff for Montgomery County Councilmember
George Leventhal and is now running for County
Council in District 5 (all or parts of Takoma
Park, Silver Spring, White Oak, Chevy Chase,
Kensington, Wheaton, Glenmont), one of the more
diverse districts in the County. Ervin has been
active on education
issues, becoming a PTSA President of Blair High
School, a NAACP Parents’ Council
representative, and a founding member of Blacks
United for Excellence in Education
In 2004 she was elected to the Montgomery
County School Board. Ervin would carry on the
progressive work done by District 5’s Tom
Perez, who is now running for State Attorney
General. Running hard, Ervin has volunteers
passing out flyers every morning and evening at
Metro stations in her district and is going
door-to-door every weekend. For more
