(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)

Valerie Ervin’s deep roots in the labor movement started with her career with the United Food and Commercial Workers Union (UFCW). Ervin went on to be an instructor at the George Meany Center for Labor Studies (now the National Labor College) in Silver Spring,  later rising to vice-president of the College.  In 2002 she became chief of staff  for Montgomery County Councilmember George Leventhal and is now running for County Council in District 5 (all or parts of Takoma Park, Silver Spring, White Oak, Chevy Chase, Kensington, Wheaton, Glenmont), one of the more diverse districts in the County. Ervin has been active on education issues, becoming a PTSA President of Blair High School, a NAACP Parents’ Council representative, and a founding member of Blacks United for Excellence in Education   In 2004 she was elected to the Montgomery County School Board. Ervin would carry on the progressive work done by District 5’s Tom Perez, who is now running for State Attorney General. Running hard, Ervin has volunteers passing out flyers every morning and evening at Metro stations in her district and is going door-to-door every weekend.  For more information on her campaign go to http://www.valerieervin.org/
