“We can do better than a Governor who vetoed a minimum wage increase,” declared Martin O’Malley at last night’s Labor 2006 Get-Out-the-Vote Kickoff Rally. O’Malley, who joined dozens of labor-endorsed candidates and hundreds of area union members at Amalgamated Transit Union Local 689’s union hall,  pledged to support a further increase in the minimum wage as Governor. Activists from more than two dozen unions – including the UFCW, AFSCME, IBEW, Machinists, Laborers, Painters and SEIU -- chanted “Ehrlich & Steele have got to go!” Peter Franchot,  running for Comptroller, vowed to investigate every state contract that comes before him to determine if a firm is anti-labor. Congressman Al Wynn (D-4) called for an end to the war in Iraq saying that “he was man enough to admit” he made a mistake when he believed President Bush that there were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. Tom Perez, running for Attorney General, and Andrew Duck, running for Congress in the 6th District also spoke directly to concerns of labor. Gino Renne, President of UFCW 1994, pinch-hit for Labor Council President Jos Williams and called on members to close ranks and elect Martin O’Malley Governor. Fred Mason, President of the Maryland State & DC AFL-CIO, urged members to join the labor walks scheduled this Saturday and each Saturday until the election.
