Right To Organize Demanded For LAZ Parking Workers At Metro

Bright yellow signs and loud cheers livened up the gray courtyard in front of Metro headquarters in downtown DC last Thursday morning as several dozen activists braved the rain and wind to tell the Metro board that parking workers deserve the right to organize and a living wage. LAZ parking, which has the contract to run Metro parking lots, has refused to respect the rights of its workers, and recently broke of talks with the union. UNITE HERE Local 27 is calling on WMATA to make it a condition of their contract that LAZ -- or any other company -- must agree to a fair and democratic process guaranteeing the right of the workers to organize. "There is no excuse for WMATA not to do this," said Emil Abate of UNITE HERE. A representative from OPEIU Local 2, which represents 750 workers at Metro's headquarters, spoke in solidarity with the parking workers.
