Building engineering staff at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel and the Residences at the Ritz-Carlton voted to form a union on November 30, reports Chris Mattingly at Operating Engineers Local 99, which will represent the workers. Twenty workers make up the building engineering staff, including watch engineers, boiler engineers, painters and Care Team workers. The Ritz Carlton Hotel and Residences are owned by the Marriott Corporation, which “have been notoriously difficult to unionize,” notes Mattingly. Local 99 currently represents the engineering staff in two Marriott Hotels in the Washington area: the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel and the Renaissance Mayflower Hotel, both in the District.
