“Do the right thing, because we are watching,” warned Rev. Jarvis Johnson at this morning’s press conference outside the new Walmart in Landover Hills, MD. Over 50 labor activists, community and political supporters gathered to “Welcome Walmart” to the community as the retail giant celebrated the new store’s grand opening. While speaker after speaker noted the commitments made by Walmart to be a good corporate citizen – including no gun, ammo, or liquor sales – they also noted a “steady trail of broken promises” and the company’s continuing failure to pay living wages or provide adequate healthcare. “With $11 billion in profits, it’s time for Walmart to step up to their responsibilities to their workers and to our communities,” said UFCW 400’s Mark Federici (pictured).
