Students and community and labor activists are banding together to expose “dirty secrets” at Starbucks, McDonald’s and Harris Teeter this Saturday. “Harris Teeter sells bacon produced by Smithfield Food, a company with a history of horrible abuse in its North Carolina processing plant, McDonald’s continues to ignore the sweatshop conditions of the workers who pick their tomatoes, and Starbucks denies their baristas the right to organize and ignores efforts by Ethiopian coffee growers to gain a fair share of coffee sales,” says Matthew Brokman of the DC Student Labor Action Project (DC SLAP). The students and labor activists are organizing a “Fair Food March” Saturday (see On the Line) to pressure the three chains to take responsibility for workers’ rights abuses by their suppliers and in their workplaces. The march starts at 11A at the Ballston-MU METRO station. For more info, contact Matthew Brokman dcslapintern@yahoo.com (Ethiopian Farmer, photo from Oxfam International)
