Labor Walks to End Cervical Cancer

Wednesday, May 23, 2007

Union members made up the largest group of walkers at Saturday's First "Beat the Clock" Walk against cervical cancer. More than 350 turned out, raising over $1,000 for cervical cancer education and awareness. "To end cervical cancer we have to do what the unions do," said the Walk's founder, Tamika Felder -- a cervical cancer survivor and AFSCME Council 20 steward, "We have to band together, make a plan and keep our eyes on the prize." In addition to AFSCME Council 20, walkers came from the Coalition of Labor Union Women (CLUW), including MD-DC State Vice President Bonnie Oakes and members of the DC Chapter, including Brenda Savoy; AFSCME Local 1000, New York (CSEA); AFSCME headquarters staff; OPEIU; AFGE; AFT; IAM; APWU; NEA; CWA; Musicians and UAW.
