AFGE Demands Investigation of DOL Outsourcing

Thursday, May 17, 2007

The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) announced Wednesday that it is seeking a Congressional investigation the Department of Labor’s (DOL) decision to outsource 250 jobs this week. AFGE is also considering filing a class action lawsuit against the DOL and Secretary Elaine Chao. "We are concerned that this competition has been unfairly awarded and disproportionately impacts African-American women who are over the age of 40," said Alex Bastani, president of AFGE Local 12, which represents DOL workers. The affected jobs, which are overwhelmingly held by African-American women, were eliminated after the agency awarded a contract to GAP Solutions, Inc. to perform critical administrative functions across thirteen departmental agencies in thirty-two locations. The news came during Public Service Recognition Week, when “we celebrate the high quality of work of federal employees and their contributions to this nation,” Bastani noted. “Abolishing these positions is a slap in the face to all federal workers." AFGE also challenged GAP’s ability to deliver on its low bid. " It is highly questionable whether the work in question can be performed for the amount stated," said Bastani.
