UNION CITY Readers Want More

Thursday, May 10, 2007

“If you ask UNION CITY readers what we want, the answer is simply 'More',” responded one reader to our recent survey. “More hard-hitting stories about how DC workers are fighting and winning.  More stories about progressive local politics and elected officials in DC and MD.  More profiles of local union leaders and activists. More coverage of local community struggles and cultural events.  More coverage of the broader labor community. Keep on keepin' on.  But more!” Nearly 250 readers responded to the survey: 67% say they always read UNION CITY, while 50% say the information is “very useful” and 47% “somewhat useful.” Local labor news was rated the most popular content (68%), with jobs postings (50%) just edging out labor history (48%) in popularity. Interestingly, labor history’s popularity jumped significantly from last year’s survey, when it ranked fifth with 37%. National labor news (41%) is neck and neck with the calendar postings (40%), while our union profiles came in at 17% and the Quote Contest at 12%. Readers offered a wealth of comments and suggestions about how to improve UNION CITY and we’ve already acted on several, including increasing our frequency – UNION CITY now comes every weekday – to cover the active local labor scene, shortening stories (longer versions appear on our website) and adding a searchable story index on the website. And we’re working on others, including expanding coverage of news from area union locals and developing other content. If you’d like to help out and contribute to what one reader called “the best CLC publication in the country,” – or if you have suggestions -- we’d love to hear from you!
