Paid Sick Days Advance in DC

Tuesday, May 1, 2007

District workers would be guaranteed paid sick days under a bill that will be introduced Tuesday morning at the DC City Council. Supporters will rally at 9:30A. The Paid Sick and Safe Days Act “provides workers in DC with a minimum standard of 10 paid days off when they or a family member are ill or need medical care,” reports Karen Minatelli of the DC Employment Justice Center. “It also allows domestic violence victims to use those days to address the violence, and gives parents paid time off to attend school-related functions.” Currently, half of all DC private sector workers have no paid sick days, while three-fourths of low-wage workers have no paid sick days at all. “This hurts them, their businesses, and our community,” says Minatelli. The bill is being introduced by Councilmembers Phil Mendelson and Harry Thomas.
