Teamsters Honor Salvadoran Human Rights Activist

Thursday, April 26, 2007

Dr. Beatrice Alamanni de Carrillo, the Ombusman of the Salvadoran Human Rights Office, will receive the first Teamsters “Gilberto Soto Human Rights Award” tonight. Dr. de Carrillo is being recognized “for her role in exposing the Salvadoran government’s coverup of the assassination” of Gilberto Soto, a Teamster leader and port worker assassinated in 2004 for his efforts to organize Salvadoran port workers, says the Teamsters Human Rights Commission. Although Dr. de Carrillo’s work to defend human rights has brought death threats against her and her family, she continues to investigate the Soto assassination and other human rights abuses.
