Capitol Workers Win Long-Awaited Contract

Monday, April 9, 2007

More than 600 laborers, custodial workers, gardeners and botanists who work for the Architect of the Capitol ratified their first contract last week. “Special congratulations to AFSCME Local 626 President Wally Reed, the negotiating team members and Council Representative Peter Inman for their hard work after many years of negotiating,” reports AFSCME Council 26 Executive Director Carl Goldman. “We also remember the hard work of the late Council Representative Jay Power who was chief negotiator for the union team before Peter.” The contract’s highlights includes issues involving use of leave, disciplinary actions, improved health and safety, and winning grievance arbitration. The workers clean and maintain buildings on Capitol Hill and work at the Botanic Gardens. Botanic Gardens and Capitol at night, photo from the DMJM website
