UDC Faculty Association Gets AFL-CIO Charter

Wednesday, April 11, 2007

In one of the first affiliations on the local level, the University of District Columbia Faculty Association – the NEA local at the University of the District of Columbia -- will join the AFL-CIO, the Maryland State & District of Columbia AFL-CIO and the Metro Washington Council next Monday, April 16. Last year, the national AFL-CIO and National Education Association approved a groundbreaking deal allowing for local arms of the NEA – which represents 3.2 million members -- to affiliate directly with the AFL-CIO. The UDC Faculty Association is among the first to receive such a certificate of AFL-CIO affiliation. AFL-CIO President John Sweeney – who credited “the foresight and leadership of the AFT in helping to provide this opportunity for a stronger more coordinated labor movement” -- along with MD/DC AFL-CIO President Fred Mason and Metro Council President Jos Williams will present the local’s official AFL-CIO charter at a ceremony at the Metro Council’s delegate meeting at 6:30P at the AFL-CIO. “This is solidarity at its finest,” said Williams. “By uniting together, we’ll all be able to fight more effectively for metro area workers, defending family incomes, health care, education, pensions, and public services.”
