MontCo Strikers Near Agreement

MontCo Strikers Near Agreement(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)Striking Montgomery County sanitation workers are holding a brief community rally early this morning before meeting with Potomac Disposal this  afternoon to try to reach an agreement. They'll deliver petitions at the 8a rally (19050 Woodfield Rd. Gaithersburg, MD); click here to join the more than 800 who have signed the petition. "We’re hoping that a little extra push from the community will help us sign a contract and end the strike," reports the Laborer's Nicole Duarte. "They almost have a fair contract, but the company won’t budge on two last requests." A $5/day pay raise for about 30 helpers "will keep Potomac Disposal from violating the County’s living wage law and give the workers who are paid the least a little extra to help them survive," says Duarte. The other outstanding issue is a clause that allows worker pay to increase with inflation. photo courtesy MALIUNA
